A Century High School student was among those who were honored Sunday night at the Oregon Sports Awards. The awards are staged annually to recognize outstanding individuals, teams and accomplishments in Oregon sports, and this year’s ceremony was staged at the Tiger Woods Center at the Nike World Headquarters near Beaverton. ESPN personality Neil Everett served as emcee for the event.

There are always a few stars who shine just a little brighter than the rest at the Oregon Sports Awards. For me, there were four who stood out Sunday night at Nike’s Tiger Woods Center. One was ESPN’s Neil Everett, who struck just the right strut in his second consecutive year as the event’s master of ceremonies.

Oregon-bred Neil Everett of ESPN SportsCenter fame served as host of the stage show at Nike’s Tiger Woods Center. He introduced a bevy of celebrity presenters as well as many of the 41 winners.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Timbers head coach Caleb Porter was awarded the Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year as part of the Oregon Sports Awards, it was announced Sunday evening at the Oregon Sports Awards show held in Beaverton, Ore. The Sportsperson of the Year, an award named after legendary Oregon State University coach and administrator Slats Gill, is given to an outstanding coach, administrator or organization from an Oregon-based team at any level of competition during the calendar year.

Two local athletes and a coach were honored at the Oregon Sports Awards Sunday night at Nike's Beaverton headquarters. Former North Medford pitcher Maryssa Becker was named the prep softball player of the year. The right-hander, who signed with Louisville, went 19-1 and hurled a no-hitter in last season's Class 6A state championship game, beating Glencoe 2-1. North Valley senior Venessa D'Arpino was given the Johnny Carpenter 4A-1A girls prep athlete of the year award. The track standout, who committed to Oregon State University, set 4A meet records in three sprints at state. She was the Skyline Conference player of the year and a first-team all-state selection in soccer.

The Oregon Sports Awards were held Sunday, a month after originally planned, and a handful of locals were among the winners. University of Oregon athlete Elizabeth Brenner won the Bill Hayward award for the amateur athlete of the year. Brenner has played four sports for the Ducks in her career. She is a two-time all-American in volleyball, and she’s played softball and basketball as well as competed in track and field.
